The senior driving presentation is designed to help older adults, caregivers, and family members understand how to drive safely as we age. The program provides practical information about age-related changes that can affect driving, strategies for maintaining safe driving habits, recognizing when it may be time to adjust driving routines, and exploring alternative transportation options when needed.

23% of Minnesota licensed drivers are age 65 or older. Each year, drivers 65 and older are responsible for approximately 20% of all reported crashes in Minnesota, sometimes with fatal consequences. Bear in mind, age alone is not a predictor of driving ability. But as we age, many factors are at work, and we face unprecedented driving challenges today, sharing the road with technology, impairment, distracted drivers, and those who speed. We are now sharing our lanes with motorcycles, and see an increase in road structure changes, such as roundabouts, sometimes making it uncomfortable for drivers to navigate.

SCWC has teamed up with the Wright County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies to create a safe, supportive space where seniors, their families, and other trusted caregivers can begin conversations that are often difficult to have. Discussions about driving, independence, and safety can be emotional and uncomfortable, making it easy for everyone involved to avoid them. The program encourages open, respectful dialogue by providing education, guidance, and resources that help participants navigate these conversations with confidence and compassion. By fostering understanding and collaboration, we empower older adults and their loved ones to make informed decisions that prioritize both independence and safety.
